Social Justice - Year 6

This half-term’s global theme, that runs like a river throughout our school, is social justice. This is looked at by all classes at different levels and in year 6 we are tackling the plight of homelessness. We are learning a bit more about this major, real-life issue in our book The Night Bus Hero. This is a great book that looks into the problem of homelessness in a child-friendly, understandable way, including: a menace called Hector; a homeless man called Thomas and brainiacs Robert and Mei-Li.   We’ve also been looking at The Arrival, a book based on the story and experience of a refugee. In English we have been writing everything from character descriptions: including semi-colons, colons, brackets, commas and dashes to poetry including: abstract nouns, verbs, adverbs, metaphors and repetition. We have also been looking at our V.I.P.E.R.S which stand for vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarise. These are the types of comprehension questions we study and we are learning about each one individually; this can really help to understand how to answer these questions and what qualities we need to include in the answer. And of course we do our English grammar and spelling key skills, during which we recap our basic English terms such as main clauses, subordinate clauses, relative clauses, prepositions, types of question, active and passive and much, much more!
