The Department for Education has recommended a list of apps to aid children's learning during Reception and KS1. To celebrate being included on this list one of the providers of these applications has made their app free on ipad, iphone and android device. This is a limited offer until the Friday 28th February. Tomorrow!

We have the app installed on all of the ipads within school and will be providing KS1 children with logins next week. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this short limited time offer. Your child will then be able to login with the accounts provided to them next week.

Class R have been working very hard in their Letters and Sounds lessons. We've been practising our blending of CVC words and remembering our tricky words. To help us with our writing we have been improving our fine motor skills through Dough Disco.

My group have been working hard this week on the 'ch' sound and learning our tricky words.  Please use your tricky words book mark to spot these words in your reading books.

Tricky words: you, they, all, are, my, her, he, she, we, me, be, was.Over the next few weeks we will keep working on these, so we can read and spell them confidently and we will be practising the sounds 'sh', 'th' and 'ng'.  We will also be looking at the alphabet, introducing the names of the letters.

This week in Letters and Sounds, we have been looking at the suffix - 'FUL' and thinking about how we can use it to create adjectives.  We have also looked carefully at the spelling of it and although it means to be 'FULL of" something, we only use 1 'l' on the suffix.

Tricky words in Phase 5

This week in Phase 5 Letters and Sounds we have been focusing on tricky words. These are the words which we can't sound out so we have to learn to recognise and memorise them.

Phase 5 Letters and Sounds

In Phase 5 Letters and Sounds we have been looking at the split vowel digraphs. In a split digraph we pronounce the first vowel as the letter name instead of it's pure sound and the 'e' on the end is silent.

Phase 2 Letters & Sounds with Mrs Smith and Mrs Evans

The children in Class R are working very hard learning phonemes and writing the initial sound in words. 

PHASE 6 VERBS, VERBS,VERBS, VERBS!

In Phase 6 Letters & Sounds we have been looking at what happens to verbs when we put them into the PAST TENSE.  We have explored how the /ed/ can make 3 different sounds but still be spelt the same - /d/ as in smiled, /t/ as in jumped and /ud/as in painted.  How will you use this to help you with your spellings?

Some verbs completely change when they are put into the past tense......can you think of some verbs which do not just add the suffix /ed/ onto them in the past tense?

e.g.             write - wrote            speak - spoke

All group phonic sessions started again on Monday and the children have settled well into their groups and with their new phonics teacher. 

All Reception children will be staying in their classroom during the Autumn term to access their phonic learning with Miss Hill & Mrs Evans.

Phase 4 Letters and Sounds

Welcome to all the new children that have now joined us in Phase 4!

When children start Phase 4 they will know a grapheme for each of the 42 phonemes. They can blend phonemes to read CVC words and segment in order to spell them.

No new graphemes are introduced. the main aim of this phase is to consolidate their knowledge and help them read and spell words which have adjacent consonants eg trap,string and milk.

Phase 4

Over the last two weeks we have all been working very hard in Letters and Sounds learning our Phase 4 graphemes. We have done this in lots of different ways. Today we got into 4 teams and when a grapheme was called out a team member threw a bean bag to the correct grapheme that was placed on the floor - this was great fun!

Class R Phase Two Letters and Sounds

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are now sending home Letters and Sounds books each Friday to help your child practise the sounds we are learning each week in school. To support your child’s learning please encourage them to practise the sounds and actions at home. Your child may also want to practise writing the sound or words containing that sound in the space provided on each page.  Please check the school website for Phase Two Letters and Sounds for further updates and information. Please ensure that your child’s book is returned to school each Thursday in preparation for the next sound.

I am pleased to report the children have done a fantastic job at lining up in the morning with the rest of the school. In order for this stage in their development to continue after half term we are asking all parents to drop off your child at the gate and wait outside of the school gates. As always members of staff will be on duty at both gates and in the playground from 8.50am.

Now - is it 's' or 'es'?

FOX - FOXES

In Phase 6 Letters and Sounds we have been exploring plurals (more than one) and trying to work out whether we need to add just an 's' or an 'es'.

Here are some of the things we discovered:

"If it sounds like 'ers' then it's 'es' - like in foxes,"

"If it ends in an 's' or 'ss' then add 'es' to the end,"

" Oooh bench and church both end in 'ch' so add an 'es',"

"Words which end in 'zz', 'sh', 'x' all need the 'es' adding to the end when we are making it plural,"

Letters and Sounds information Phase 6 Spring Term.

Hello all,

This is just a brief overview of what your children in Phase 6 of Letters and Sounds shall be learning over the next few week until February half term.

Note: This may be subject to change if children are really struggling with an aspect or we feel it would be beneifical for children to recap something we have already learnt in previous weeks.

Week 1 week beginning 7/1/13

Adding 'ment', 'ing' and 'ed' to words and slight 'w' and 'b'

week 2 week beg 14/1/13

Prefixes for example adding 're' 'un' 'pre' to root words and silent 'g' and 'k' words.

Week 3 week beg 21/1/13

Using and applying suffixes at the end of a word and words containing 'sh'.

Week 4 week beg 28/1/13

Using speech marks in our writing.

Week 5 week beg 4/2/13

Using the apostrophe.

Week 6 will be an assessment week where we can look at the children and ensure they are in the correct phase and we will look at what areas we need to focus more on next term.

Phase 5

These are the phonemes that we have been looking at this week.

Letters and Sounds week Beg 1/10/12 Phase 6

This week we will be looking at and learning the following:

syllables - looking at how we can split words up into syllables and how rather than clapping the syllables in a word, when you say a word and your chin 'goes down' then that is usually 1 syllable....try it it really works!

Root words - we are finding root words for example the root word for the word 'excitement' is 'excite' and 'happiness' root word is 'happy'.

You all did an excellent job at remembering the shape and spelling structure of words like: said, where, were, there, their and what. Later this week you will be identifying the spelling rule for adding 'ing'.

We also reminded ourselves of the importance of being able to spell the days of the week.

Phase 6 Letters and Sounds

Our Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics

At our school we are ever striving to promote children's growing understanding of why words are spelt in particular ways,  with the aim of the children going on to apply it in their independent writing.

This process is supported in taught sessions in the school day and our Letters and Sounds Programme.

We do this through:

• shared writing: the teacher demonstrates how to apply spelling strategies while writing and teaching proofreading skills;
• guided and independent writing: the children apply what they have been taught. This is the opportunity to think about the whole writing process: composition as well as spelling, handwriting and punctuation;
• marking the children's work: the teacher can assess their progress and their ability to understand and apply what has been taught, then identify targets for future improvement;
• teaching and practising handwriting: learning and practising a fluent joined style will support your child's spelling development.

This week in Phase 6 we will be learning about spelling rules for adding 'ing', 'er' and 'est'.

Phase Four Letters and Sounds

This week Mrs Hird's group have been learning to read and spell some of the phase 4 tricky words.

They have also been blending words to read and segmenting words to spell, some examples of these words are: spot, trip, twin, swim, smell, clown, flag and frog.

Please remember that phonics is the step up to fluent word recognition. Automatic and effortless reading of all words- decodable and tricky- is our ultimate goal. By repeated sounding and blending of words, children get to know them, and once this happens, they should be encouraged to read them straight off in reading text, rather than continuing to sound them out because they feel that this is what is required. Please continue to support your child using 'silent phonics' for those words that are unfamiliar.

Next week (week commencing 30.4.12)

The tricky word focus will be on were, there, little and one.

The children will be researching the graphemes 'igh' and 'air' and will be encouraged to use a dictionary to find words with these spelling patterns.

Last week we looked at verbs (doing words) and how these change when writing in the PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE.  We also looked at words which end in 'ed' and identified whether the final sound was  a /d/ or /t/.

Letters and Sounds Update

All of the children on our Letters and Sounds Programme have been working extremely hard and have made some good progress against their targets.

Following our end of term assessments there will be some changes to the teaching groups.  This term each member of staff involved in phonics teaching will be teaching a different phase therefore your child may stay in their classroom or move to a different room. The sessions will continue to be twenty minutes focussed time. 

The groups are as follows:

Mrs Hird- Phase 4

Miss Hickling- Phase 5

Mrs Rhodes and Mrs Reckless- Phase 6

Some Key Stage Two children will continue to access Letters and Sounds sessions.  Other Key Stage 2 children who have been accessing Letters & Sounds will now be taught key spelling rules and patterns during their daily literacy lessons and classroom activities.

Phase 5 'ow, ou, ow'! (WB 19.3.12)

Phase 2- 'Letters and Sounds'

Over the next few weeks we will be re-visiting all of the sounds in phase 2 to help secure our understanding.

Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

We will also be looking at CVC words which have these sounds either at the beginning, middle or the end.

Children will be encouraged to use their knowledge of the letter sounds to blend and sound out words. For example, They will learn to blend the sounds s-a-t to make the word sat. They will also start learning to segment words. For example, they might be asked to find the letter sounds that make the word tap from a small selection of magnetic letters.

High Frequency Words (Key Sight Word Lists)

The attached document is a copy of all of the first 100 and then the next 200 high frequency words.  There is also a copy of how these words are split into the different phases (2-5) as decodable and tricky words.  By the end of phase 5 children should be able to automatically read all the words in the list of 100 high frequency words and accurately spell most of the words in the list of 100 high frequency words.

Please help your child to recognise these words in everyday situations, such as on signs or in their favourite books or magazines.

Tricky Words in Phase 5

There are 100 common words that recur frequently in much of the written material young children read and that they need when they write. Most of these are decodable by sounding and blending, however there are some words that are 'tricky' and have unusual patterns.
