We have been using this interactive spelling game to help us with learning our key word spellings.

Have a try at home - which level can you get up to?

Do you like the Look, Cover, Write, Check way of learning?

Phase 6 prefixes

In Letters and Sounds, phase 6 is all about prefixes!

The children impressed me with how many 'un' words they could remember and think of. Well done children! Can you remember what 'un' and 're' do to a word?

Tricky words: you, they, all, are, my, her, he, she, we, me, be, was.Over the next few weeks we will keep working on these, so we can read and spell them confidently and we will be practising the sounds 'sh', 'th' and 'ng'.  We will also be looking at the alphabet, introducing the names of the letters.

Keep up the good work Phase 3

Mrs Shelton

Letters & Sounds Phase 6 2017!

This week in Letters and Sounds, we have been looking at the suffix - 'FUL' and thinking about how we can use it to create adjectives.  We have also looked carefully at the spelling of it and although it means to be 'FULL of" something, we only use 1 'l' on the suffix.

To earn a merit, I have sent home a word search activity to be completed,

please return on Monday, 9th January.

To earn another merit, can you make a list of 10 words which use the suffix 'ful'?

Good luck!

Tricky words in Phase 5

This week in Phase 5 Letters and Sounds we have been focusing on tricky words. These are the words which we can't sound out so we have to learn to recognise and memorise them.

Have a go at this game which will help to practise the Phase 5 words :-)

Phase 2 with Mrs Evans. We have been sound making in a mirror and discussing the way our lips move when we say different sounds. Set 3 letters will be introduced this week- g o c k .

Phase 6 Letters & Sounds

This week in Letters & Sounds, we have been taking ownership of our own spelling and word meaning learning.  We have identified words which we need to spell and we have been using a variety of strategies to help us:

  1. We used Look, say, cover, write and check.
  2. We played games with the words we need to learn.
  3. We've used a dictionary to find out what the words mean.

We have had lots of fun with words.  Please look at the Spellzone website to continue this fun!

Letters & Sounds with Mrs Reckless

We've been looking at what happens to nouns when we change them from singular to plural.  We have been looking carefully at the spelling rules.

Can your child explain what is happening in the posters below?

Phase 6 Letters & Sounds

As requested by the children, here are two links for the online games that we have been playing with irregular verbs.

Enjoy!

Phase 5 Letters and Sounds

In Phase 5 Letters and Sounds we have been looking at the split vowel digraphs. In a split digraph we pronounce the first vowel as the letter name instead of it's pure sound and the 'e' on the end is silent.

Have a go at this game to see if you can make some words using the split digraphs. Can you list some of the words that you have made? Have fun :-)

http://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/16022007/wordmaker_vowels3/lesson.html

Phase 2 Letters & Sounds with Mrs Smith and Mrs Evans

The children in Class R are working very hard learning phonemes and writing the initial sound in words.

PHASE 6 VERBS, VERBS,VERBS, VERBS!

In Phase 6 Letters & Sounds we have been looking at what happens to verbs when we put them into the PAST TENSE.  We have explored how the /ed/ can make 3 different sounds but still be spelt the same - /d/ as in smiled, /t/ as in jumped and /ud/as in painted.  How will you use this to help you with your spellings?

Some verbs completely change when they are put into the past tense......can you think of some verbs which do not just add the suffix /ed/ onto them in the past tense?

e.g.             write - wrote            speak - spoke

Make a comment of 10 irregular verbs and there's a merit waiting for you!  Good luck!

Phase 6 words with ing

We've had lots of fun learning the spelling rules for adding 'ing' to the end of verbs.

We've used this website - please have fun with it at home too.

http://www.spellzone.com/games/index.cfm?wordlist=1145

To earn a merit can you write down a list of 10 verbs which have to change their spelling when 'ing' is added to them?

For example write - writing, shop - shopping.

Phase 6 with Mrs Reckless

In Phase 6 this week, we have been making sure that we can spell all of the ear 2 common exception words.  Show your Mummy & Daddy how clever you are.......

We have also started to look at what an ADJECTIVE is, a NOUN and a VERB.

We have also been looking at verbs in the present and past tense:

Other children have been looking at silent letters, especially those beginning with a gn and a kn.  Children can you remember some of the words we have looked at together?   Please comment below.

Over the next week, we will be looking at spelling all of the tricky words so far and thinking about choosing the correct long vowel sound for spelling words that we use a lot. Please help your child to spell these at home.

Letters and sounds phase 6

Last week we were learning all about compound words such as car and park makes carpark. This week we will be looking at words beginning with un or dis. Can you think of any words beginning like this and post them on the website?

Phase 6 Letters and Sounds

noise, fur, thirst, bone.

We then thought about how we could use these words in an expanded noun phrase:

e.g. The noisy brown dog was barking as the red tractor full of smelly straw drove by.

Can you write some sentences in the comments below, using the words we have been looking at?

Class R Phase Two Letters and Sounds

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are now sending home Letters and Sounds books each Friday to help your child practise the sounds we are learning each week in school. To support your child’s learning please encourage them to practise the sounds and actions at home. Your child may also want to practise writing the sound or words containing that sound in the space provided on each page.  Please check the school website for Phase Two Letters and Sounds for further updates and information. Please ensure that your child’s book is returned to school each Thursday in preparation for the next sound.

I am pleased to report the children have done a fantastic job at lining up in the morning with the rest of the school. In order for this stage in their development to continue after half term we are asking all parents to drop off your child at the gate and wait outside of the school gates. As always members of staff will be on duty at both gates and in the playground from 8.50am.

Many thanks

Phase 5 Letters and Sounds with Miss Hill

Well done to my phase 5 Letters and Sounds group, who have been working really hard this week!

Please can you practise the following tricky words for bingo next week.

Good luck!

oh, their, people, Mr, Mrs, looked, called, asked and could.

Now - is it 's' or 'es'?

FOX - FOXES

In Phase 6 Letters and Sounds we have been exploring plurals (more than one) and trying to work out whether we need to add just an 's' or an 'es'.

Here are some of the things we discovered:

"If it sounds like 'ers' then it's 'es' - like in foxes,"

"If it ends in an 's' or 'ss' then add 'es' to the end,"

" Oooh bench and church both end in 'ch' so add an 'es',"

"Words which end in 'zz', 'sh', 'x' all need the 'es' adding to the end when we are making it plural,"

BOX - BOXES

MAKING PLURALS

Which nouns can you think of which

have 'es' added to them?

Phase 6 ed = /d/, /t/ or /id/?

In Phase 6 this week, we have been continuing to look at the past tense.  We have been exploring how the suffix 'ed' can sometimes sound like a /d/, can sometimes sound like a /t/ or  /id/ but is always spelt 'ed'.

Can you read these words at home and tell an adult what the'ed' sounds like at the end?

loaded            called        wrecked        grunted      sprayed        seemed             roasted    knocked         pushed       groaned        turned        floated         screamed         swooped     sorted           laughed        helped          cheated

As you're reading your reading books, can you find any more words which end in 'ed'?

Post a comment or make a list and bring it into share next week.

http://www.mrthorne.com/softg/

Can you explain how the bottle on this post was important this week? If you can, write it down on a piece of paper and bring it with you to our next Letters and Sounds session.  Any correct answer earns a merit.  Good luck!

Phase 5

These are the phonemes that we have been looking at this week.

ew               oe               au            ey       as in screw   as in heroes     as in launch   as in trolley

Can you think of the alternative choices that you have for spelling these sounds?

Earn yourself a merit by making a list of 10 words which have the above spelling choices in them or have the alternative spelling choices e.g. screw, boo, blue, flute, juice, group.

Earn another merit by writing 5 sentences which have some of these words in:

1. Superman quickly flew down to rescue the screaming girl!

Phase 5

The children have been revisiting and investigating the following digraphs this week.

/wh/          /ph/          /oy/           /ir/

They have found words containing these sounds and have looked at alternative ways of spelling them, for example /ir/ also has the choices /er/ and /ur/.

The children have used the following link in class - have a try at home:

http://www.ictgames.com/lcwc.html

Phase 5 W/B 15/10/12

This week we have been having another look at the split vowel digraphs 'a_e', 'e_e',' i_e', 'o_e' and 'u_e'.  We have been reading, writing and finding other words in the dictionary which contain these split vowel digraphs.

Please follow the link below to have a look at the videos on the Espresso website:

Can you think of a word which contains each of these sounds and post them on here?

Phase 5 week beginning 8/10/12

In Phase 5 this week we have started to look at the next 200 key words.  We have been reading, spelling and writing them in sentences.  We have identified the 'tricky' parts of some of the words and thought about how 'sound buttons' can help when spelling words.

Sound buttons

meat         repeat        graph

(3 sound buttons) (5 sound buttons)  (4 sound buttons)

The following powerpoint contains the next 200 words that we will be looking at in lesson time.  Please have a look through and read and spell a few at a time.

oh/o_e/oe/oa/ow I say!

In Phase 5 we have been reading, writing and sorting words which contain the phoneme /oa/.

Oh!          woke          toe          foam          show

Earn yourself a merit and create a list of 15 words containing the /oa/ phoneme - you can use any of the spelling choices.

Phase 3 week beginning 8.10.12

This week we are looking at the sound...

igh

Follow the link for a video about the "igh" sound.

Letters and Sounds week Beg 1/10/12 Phase 6

This week we will be looking at and learning the following:

syllables - looking at how we can split words up into syllables and how rather than clapping the syllables in a word, when you say a word and your chin 'goes down' then that is usually 1 syllable....try it it really works!

Root words - we are finding root words for example the root word for the word 'excitement' is 'excite' and 'happiness' root word is 'happy'.

Enjoy!

Miss Thompson

Phase 5 Week beginning 17/9/12

We have been looking at how to make the right spelling choice:

For example: 'rescoo', 'rescew' or 'rescue'.

some, come, were, there, said, so, have, like.

Phase 3 week beginning 17.09.12

Phase 6 Letters and Sounds

Our Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics

At our school we are ever striving to promote children's growing understanding of why words are spelt in particular ways,  with the aim of the children going on to apply it in their independent writing.

This process is supported in taught sessions in the school day and our Letters and Sounds Programme.

We do this through:

  • shared writing: the teacher demonstrates how to apply spelling strategies while writing and teaching proofreading skills;
  • guided and independent writing: the children apply what they have been taught. This is the opportunity to think about the whole writing process: composition as well as spelling, handwriting and punctuation;
  • marking the children's work: the teacher can assess their progress and their ability to understand and apply what has been taught, then identify targets for future improvement;
  • teaching and practising handwriting: learning and practising a fluent joined style will support your child's spelling development.

This week in Phase 6 we will be learning about spelling rules for adding 'ing', 'er' and 'est'.

Phase Four Letters and Sounds

This week Mrs Hird's group have been learning to read and spell some of the phase 4 tricky words.

  • have
  • like
  • some
  • come

They have also been blending words to read and segmenting words to spell, some examples of these words are: spot, trip, twin, swim, smell, clown, flag and frog.

Please remember that phonics is the step up to fluent word recognition. Automatic and effortless reading of all words- decodable and tricky- is our ultimate goal. By repeated sounding and blending of words, children get to know them, and once this happens, they should be encouraged to read them straight off in reading text, rather than continuing to sound them out because they feel that this is what is required. Please continue to support your child using 'silent phonics' for those words that are unfamiliar.

Next week (week commencing 30.4.12)

The tricky word focus will be on were, there, little and one.

The children will be researching the graphemes 'igh' and 'air' and will be encouraged to use a dictionary to find words with these spelling patterns.

HAPPY READING AND SPELLING!

They will also start learning to segment words. For example, they might be asked to find the letter sounds that make the word tap from a small selection of magnetic letters.

We will also be practising the first five tricky words

to, no, go, I, the

Please help your child to recognise these words in everyday situations, such as on signs or in their favourite books or magazines.

Many thanks.

Are you a 'Letters and Sounds' superstar reader?

Have a go at reading and practising these high-frequency (common) words. How quickly can you read through them?

Tricky Words in Phase 5

There are 100 common words that recur frequently in much of the written material young children read and that they need when they write. Most of these are decodable by sounding and blending, however there are some words that are 'tricky' and have unusual patterns.

Please help your child to read and spell these tricky words in phase 5.
